EdTech: Asynchronous teaching and learning
Synchronous learning occurs when the teacher and learners are present in real time. Meeting face-to-face remains central to most statutory and higher education. Asynchronous learning allows learners to choose the time and place at which they learn. It depends on access to resources rather to a teacher and is the heart of online learning.
Aim
Creating and delivering effective asynchronous teaching and learning
Objective
After completing the module, you will be able to:
- Create resources and opportunities for effective asynchronous teaching and learning
- Adopt and deliver effective asynchronous teaching and learning practice
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - B4a : Teaching context: fully online - towards a community of learning
- Set up learning activities in digital environments, having foreseen learners' needs for guidance and catering for them.
- Interact with learners in digital environments.
- Digitally monitor learner behaviour during a session and offer guidance when needed.
- Use digital technologies to remotely monitor learner progress and intervene when needed, while allowing for self-regulation.
- Experiment with and develop new forms and formats for offering guidance and support, using digital technologies.

Taking note of your feedback
We greatly appreciate the time taken to provide us with feedback on each module. We regularly review all the feedback provided and use it to inform the development of new modules. Subject to funds being available and other constraints, we will amend existing modules where feedback shows this is required.Feedback from other members about this module
Got to know a new term.
Important to get the right balance. Asynchronous may have extra work attached to it by checking students have completed tasks and more planning in terms of differentiation.
good course
some good points raised
Useful module, eps the reflection section.
I don't fully agree with the quiz options on this one. Asynchronous and synchronous learning apparently do not work well together which was in opposition to what the video implied.
Simple module
Confusing
Good module that clarifies what synchronous and asynchronous mean.
very helpful
Very informative.
Good module , thanks .
A really informative module
this was a good module
Good module as has prompted more 'food for thought' than other ones so far.
A good worked example of how asynchronous resources could be deployed and the reflective question was useful for me.
I did find that the True/False questions were somewhat ambiguous - ie "True or False, Asynchronous and synchronous learning work well together" has an answer "false", because a learner can't do both at the same time - but one could argue that it's true, because they can complement one another in curriculum design.
Good to find a blended approach to learning
Effective Module! Cheers
It is a good tool. I do feel the video went through scenarios too quickly that made me lose the impact or full understanding of the meaning. 3 minutes of screen changes and being spoken at.
Good unit
A useful reminder of the differences and how well asynchronous teaching can help learners develop their skills.
Very informative. I found the links really useful.
Made me think about not relying so heavily on synchronous teaching and giving learners more to do in their own time
I have been aware of this delivery for a little while now. It was good to recap and cement the need for me to improve what are company currently offers via asynchronous delivery. This is something that I will work on over the coming months.
intersting to see the different and put a name to somehting
Module about Synchronous learning when the teacher and learners are present in real time
An easy quick introduction to online learning and two words teachers have avoided for years
quick and easy to use
Cleared any misconceptions.
I found the question about tools tricky. Video conferencing and social media are in my opinion two different tools as for video conferencing the partners connect at the same time so I thought it's synced, while social media posts could be synched when partners interact via replies to instant posts and asynchronous when they interact with the app when they are available on their own.
Clear and helpful introduction. Good examples and a noticeable success in diverse characters and stereotype breaking! One spelling error in animation - "Deliverly".
Some useful information included.
It will enable me to think about how to integrate the two forms of teaching to the best advantage of learners
good
Useful module to get you thinking about how affected your asynchronous resources are and how they work hand in hand with synchronous resources.
Great to learn about
Some useful ideas about combining synchronous/asynchronous learning; a little bit theoretical in that many teachers are probably already doing these things and calling them homework or online practice.
Logical and well structured information
Great
Informative with excellent links to expand knowledge alongside useful resources to be explored .
This is a very clear module.
A good idea, I like the idea of freeing up time and a time that is convenient for both tutor and learner not entirely sure it will suit all learners needs .
Very useful and simple to follow and understand the benefits
Overall good info and nice explanation. A bit technical for some, but nice and succinct.
Its good idea so teaching and learning can synchronize if there any obstacles.

Great links to tools and strategies for effective asynchronous teaching.
A clear introduction.
An interesting module . I like the way feedback was given in a clear manner .
This was a very interesting module.
A clear distinction between synchronous and asynchronous teaching approaches with practical examples of creating opportunities for effective asynchronous teaching and learning. Visiting or revisiting the Flipped Learning module will also add value
Simple explanation of key types of remote learning
Good
