EdTech: Accommodating different levels of digital skills

3.6

The diversity of learners extends to differences in their levels of digital skills, experience and confidence.

This module looks at ways to ensure that our teaching does not disadvantage those with existing low levels of digital skills.

Exploring
Aim

This module shows you the opportunities and challenges of accommodating different levels of digital skills and confidence in teaching and assessment practice.

Objective

After completing this module, you will be able to:
- consider the implications of different levels of digital skills and confidence for delivering effective and equitable learning activities
- identify the characteristics of learning activities that enable learners to succeed with different levels of digital skills and confidence.

Digital Teaching Professional Framework

This module covers the EdTech component - A3 : Support for learning and support activities including initial assessment - empowering learners through technology

  • Identify learners' digital skills and confidence, plan appropriate learning activities, assignments and assessments, to provide relevant scaffolding and support for learners with different digital literacy skills.
  • Incorporate learning activities, assignments and assessments which encourage and require learners to
    • Articulate information needs, to search for data, information and content in digital environments, to access them and to navigate between them.
    • Create and update personal search strategies.
    • Adapt search strategies based on the quality of information found.
    • Analyse, compare and critically evaluate the credibility and reliability of sources of data, information and digital content.
    • Organise, store and retrieve data, information and content in digital environments.

Fair point that everyone has digital skills so an initial assessment should be done. I would easily get carried away with using technology!

Our Response: A comment is always helpful, thanks.

Good way of helping learners who have low abilities in using digital technology as lecturer and learners can come up with strategies to help them through their learning.

Our Response: A comment is always helpful, thanks.

Sometimes we don't realise we have students with differing technological capabilities and this video helps highlight that notion and how we can help our learners so that everyone can access the requirement learning and assessment

I thought the framing of the questions wasn't as strong for this module as for others.

Whilst there are important considerations covered here there seems to be an implicit assumption that IT skills can be separated from vocational skills but I think that assumption needs challenging. If learners aren't supported in developing digital skills in class I'm not convinced how employable they'll be after qualifying. Personally I'd put more emphasis on encouraging and supporting their digital skills rather than accommodating their absence (though obviously both play a part).

Good perspective that not all learners like to move forward with technology, it can be very hard working in an environment that is trying to be as digitally creative and forward thinking. Some things to think about.

Our Response: Adding a comment to your rating makes a real difference! Thanks.

First module I have done and found the questions hard to put into categories. Maybe that's just me?

It is important to empower learners via technology and this bite size session discusses effectively the implications of dealing with learners of different levels of digital skills and suggests learning activities that enable these learners to succeed in their learning.

Our Response: Thanks! Always helpful for us and your peers to read your recommendations.

The module helped me understand how important it is to be aware, when using new technologies, not to create any digital barriers and divide. As educators, it is important for us to think outside of our curricula and support learners in developing the skills to live, work and study in a digital society.

Our Response: Adding a comment to your rating makes a real difference! Thanks.
