EdTech: Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Teaching Strategies
This module looks at the impact on teaching strategy of learners who bring their own devices. This has implications for users of assistive technology and for those learners who prefer to work on their own devices.
Aim
This module shows you how to adapt teaching strategies to accommodate Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Adapt teaching and learning activities
- Adapt content to be accessible with a range of devices
- Consider how sharing and interaction between learners' own devices may offer opportunities for greater engagement in the learning programme
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - F1 : Accessibility
- Provide equitable access to appropriate digital technologies and resources, e.g. ensuring that all learners have access to the digital technologies used.
- Select and use digital strategies which respond to the learner's digital context, e.g. contextual constraints to their technology use (e.g. availability, institutional restrictions - offender learning, work based learning), competences, expectations, attitudes, misconceptions and misuses.
- Use digital technologies and strategies, e.g. assistive technologies, designed for learners' in need of special support (e.g. learners with physical or mental constraints; learners with learning disorders).
- Consider and respond to potential accessibility issues when selecting, modifying or creating digital resources and to provide alternative or compensatory tools or approaches for learners with special needs.
- Use design principles for increasing accessibility for the resources and digital environments used in teaching.
- Continuously monitor and reflect on the suitability of the measures implemented to improve accessibility and adapt strategies accordingly.

I really enjoyed this bite sized module. It made me think about my own practice in relation to accessibility and how I decide what teaching strategy to use.
Gives a general overview, useful enough.
Good for learners when collecting data or researching information whilst out on trips or working in the classroom.
A good set of resources suggested at the end. I re discovered menti-meter.
The current policy at Gen2 is that the use of personal devices is not permitted but it was interesting to read about how learners with learning difficulties or those that speak another language may benefit from using their own devices.
Anything that helps learning has to be a bonus.
The module gives you the information to think about using different tech to help learners
great resources, will use in future practice.
Useful module and applicable to my current area of delivery
Reasonably straight forward once you understand the format of the module.
Straightforward and accessible.
I have some very real problems with the content of this module. PDFs are most definitely not good accessibility practice. Not unless you specify that they must be created in a certain way, checked and certified as accessible especially for people who are blind or partially sighted who use assistive technology. Some of the resources similarly exclude some disabled people. For example, Wakelet is a lovely smooth visual interface but as it includes no option to upload audio it rather excludes those of us who create and use audio (yes I know you can upload videos but that is not the same thing). Some of the resources recommended are so deeply embedded in the American education system in tone and content that I wonder how helpful they can be for UK providers.
The JISC link to BOYD policies is duplicated and I would suggest out of date as it has not been updated since GDPR 2018.
Understanding the importance of Students personal Technology, they feel comfortable having there own devices with their own work platforms.
Thought-provoking, but also makes you feel that you are on the right track.
easy to follow and quick to complete
how does Google docs accessibility compare with office 365 on phones?
This sentence is unlcear:
Based on the needs and preferences learners may have, which of the following statements are more helpful and which are less helpful for learning in how learning is designed to make the best use of BYOD.
Good module. Make you think how the world has changed in that teaching and learning can happen in the comfort of your own home or on the go. Thank you!
very interesting very informative and practical
Consider access to WIFI and other IT
This module clearly explains the benefits of BYOD to all the learners especially the learners with certain disabilities or learning difficulties.
A very useful focus on the impact of delivery for learners who bring their own devices and implications for users of assistive technology. It is often overlooked when considering learners who prefer to work on their own devices.
Very good and informative module on the value of learners using personal devices to aid learning. It's certainly an area I would like to develop further in my lessons.
Great course useful information
Limited detail on accessibility issues that may be encountered and the problems that may be encountered when learners use their own devices.
Useful reminder of the benefits of BYOD for students
BYOD is the future for FE and its a great tool for teaching and learning
good information - found the extra information about apple phone accessibility and pintrest useful
Really useful links at the bottom for suggestions of other collaborative ways of working with own devices and collating content to share
easy to follow, good introduction
Some good advice on here. I also use get the learners to use their phones to complete quizzes or to find data relating to a subject.
Useful further links on device features in extra reading materials.
I lack knowledge of how to work across devices and the functionality of different devices so this was an introduction.
Concise overview of what BYOD is and its benefits.
Good module as an introduction to the brought your own devices
Very informative thank you - the poster is particularly helpful both for me and students.
I find the design of your webpages absolutely infuriating. There is no obvious 'end point' or visible sign of progress. Ironically, the webpages look great to look at but that's not reflected in its ease of use.
Content is fine.
Lack of instruction on how to finish
Learnt new elements
good module
Really nice introductory module. Made me think about interaction and using programs such as zeetings.
Better understanding of the way students can use own devices to contribute to the group tasks.
Really enjoyed, picked up a few things on the way
I'm not really sure about the answers to some of the questions - like safeguarding and privacy etc when using BYODs - could do with some more info. There seems a lot to think about here!
Interested. Need to reflect how to use with students.
This module made me think about accessibility and how learners can use their own devices in class.
I'm an advocate of BOYD, as long as you have sorted access for those who do not have or wish to bring their own device.
I use the students mobiles to complete quizzes, my first task normally is to convince the students that there mobiles can do so much more than just social media, the next stage is to get them to hook up to eduroam so they are not wasting their data on learning. I am aware that some students don't have up-to-date phones or are embarrassed by how old their technology is, so I use a quiz that crosses over to other platforms so they can use class laptops, computers and tablets. As a teacher I use my mobile to find what words mean or how to spell them in front of my students to encourage them to try. Speaking to google needs to be taught and of course they start with the funny or inappropriate but if one of them goes away with this new skill then its an achievement. QR codes are not used enough and I am going to think about how I can use them more within my classroom to encourage the students.
A great introduction for digital technology
Much better resources at the end, but still need to have this content in the body of the teaching, rather than as an extra which can be ignored.
Some good advice and ideas in the case study but I'd dispute making files available as PDF as a solution - html, googledocs, Word online etc provide better experiences on small devices..
Simple bite sized video and task. Good selection of resources for further reading.
interesting but not for my situation
These applets are very much all of the same and very shallow learning tools I dont really like them
Learners having their own accessibility settings already in place on their own device promotes ownership of their own learning
I was unable to open the video- not all our learners have access to tech based equipment in the classroom.
Useful but different levels and abilities require and are capable of various use of BYOD.
Umm interesting
Very useful
Shows how students bringing their own devices csn facilitate their learning
learners using their own device is a great idea as it can be set up for their own needs and preference, this module is worth taking a look to explain the benefits, unfortunately in my experience using their own devices makes it is all to easy for the learner to be distracted with access their own social lives where focus on their studies is important.
Great module.
Balancing use of PDF vs Word is interesting. Students do prefer native file formats as it means they can easily use the settings of their device.
i probably need to know more about this area
This was a useful exercise to reflect on what Covid restrictions had made me adapt for my self and the students . It also made me reflect on some of the issues that I had found difficult whilst working across sites, the students also showed me how adaptable they could be, for example we accessed open source soft wear to help students learn skills and present their work, some student have gone on to use their digital skills in new roles despite the difficult employment situations and they have done this because they have developed the adaptability by using good research skills and putting in the time to build their learning, at times accessibility can be hard if you have to change methods all the time, which is why it is so important to view what the Apprectiship job role entails and have good links with their managers, in a school this could be how the system is set up and administrated. As we all adapt quickly to this new way of working having your own device can make setting up learning in a familiar environment easier and reassuring as it can be adapted and suited to the learner and improved over time- eventually by the learner themselves.
Provides new ideas that help support learners by using their own devices
No proper teaching input and a reliance on staff having prior knowledge on the subject area.
what a load of cluttered junk. unclear and to much on 1 page please make it more clear.
What a load of cluttered junk. Unclear, too much on one page. I'd be better off using my time doing REAL stuff.
A nice start
The video does not really provide specific information relating to the questions asked.
Some of the correct answers need a bit more explaining, if I understood them beforehand then I would understand how they collate to the question.
BYOD is explained perfectly.
Loved it learnt a lot
great ideas
Thank you
good
