EdTech: Supporting special learning needs
This module looks at a broad classification of learning disabilities and the forms of technology that are best suited to overcome the associated challenges to learning.
Aim
This module shows you the characteristics of learning disadvantage and technology that can lower barriers to learning.
Objective
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Describe the characteristics of learning disadvantage
- dentify generic forms of technology-based support that can lower barriers
Digital Teaching Professional Framework
This module covers the EdTech component - F2 : Equality and diversity
- Address the special needs of individual learners (e.g. dyslexia, ADHD, overachievers) using digital technologies
- Allow for different learning pathways, levels and speeds when designing, selecting and implementing digital learning activities.
- Devise individual learning plans and use digital technologies to support these.
- Adapt communication strategies to the specific audience and be aware of cultural and generational diversity in digital environments

good
I have really learnt a lot in this module.
This module has made me aware of the need to think about not only the software and devices available to learners but also ensuring they have an understanding of how to use it and what to use it for
Good learning progress
as all teaching establishments need to be all inclusive, this module has some great tips
It does not help with learner with difficulties. It has an ICT approach, not what best to do to help.
Interesting outline of the key points we need to consider in the classroom with a range of abilities.
Quite useful
Useful information on assistive technology for learners.
No learning information is provided apart from a very short video, which did not cover the areas which the questions were asking about. I had to check that I wasn't missing any training information before answering the questions. For staff members who do not have an extensive knowledge of technology this was not informative.
Don't like it. There is WAY too much content on each page. Very Confusing to use.
All these training units could be condensed and into one training course instead of having all these separate units.
The content of the lesson is good but I found the wording of the first question was ambiguous.
Good way to use technology
More on how a track ball mouse could help and how study bar might help all students could be good but otherwise a nice introduction with some good tips
Very basic information but with links to more detailed resources
thought provoking - how text heavy is our approach!
The video was great but didn’t provide a link to the activities. Activity 1 : the drop down didn’t match the narrative text so was confusing. Activity 2 : using the word ‘application’ alongside soft/hardware is confusing because of the multiple meanings of the word. In this context it reads like ‘app’ rather than ‘in use’
a good module
made me think
Accessibility - hardware & software
This module had a clear information on how to best use the different forms of technology to overcome barriers to learning.
good
Gave some insight but I couldn't grasp how to influence my teaching.
Great course thanks
Suggestion of considering all media types when producing resources or schemes of work is a valid one. Text is the go-to solution for many when considering the standard of PowerPoint but even within that there is scope for the use of other media.
A couple of things that I didn't know, thanks.
Great use of some resources and how it affects users
good course
Good module with some interesting facts.
Good refresher for supporting learning difficulty
Useful info on disability types and use of media.
Great reminder to ensure that learners individual needs to be thought about when giving and planning tasks to do.
Useful insight
The information was concise and useful. The 'multiple choice' Q and A was an effective way of learning with opportunity to re-try. Downloadable resources for reference helpful also.
1. A learner attempts to write an assignment using PowerPoint slides for each section of the writing.
Result: The learner produces work but in a way that does not show it in the best light. The technology offers no advantage for the effort made.
'Caused by poor use of technology'.
(then it is caused by lack of access to suitable technology, if the technology offers no advantage for the effort made). Plus they could have produced suitable work, if they had access to suitable technology.
Good
Helpful ideas re classroom resources.
I didn't find this module as engaging as others. The video went through the subject very quickly and I wasn't 100% sure of the terminology used in the interactive quiz.
Interesting that most teachers will learn the way that is of least use to SEND
Good points to reflect on
This could have been made much better by clear examples using the assessments in the additional material.
A nice quick recap of how learners with a range of disabilities can engage more with learning
Useful to see the plot of resource types for different disabilities - might have been good to see more disabilities plotted.
Vast area in trying to think of ways to engage and encourage SEN learners and their learning within a classroom environment.
A nice starter but more examples needed
A basic understanding given
Gives an overview, but useful as a result.
Matching task should indicate what answers may be wrong on the first attempt, it leads to confusion by taking everything is wrong. Not a helpful learning experience
This is my area of need so lots here that I follow but good reminders.
