EdTech: Creating inclusive content: Practice

3.5

This module follows on from the module Creating inclusive content: Principles. It shows how the principles from Creating inclusive content: Principles can be applied to create resources that are good for all users.

Adopting
Aim

This module shows you how to design and create resources that work for all learners.

Objective

After completing this module you will be able to:
- create resources that work for all users
- refresh your existing content in line with the principles of good practice

Digital Teaching Professional Framework

This module covers the EdTech component - F1 : Accessibility

  • Provide equitable access to appropriate digital technologies and resources, e.g. ensuring that all learners have access to the digital technologies used.
  • Select and use digital strategies which respond to the learner's digital context, e.g. contextual constraints to their technology use (e.g. availability, institutional restrictions - offender learning, work based learning), competences, expectations, attitudes, misconceptions and misuses.
  • Use digital technologies and strategies, e.g. assistive technologies, designed for learners' in need of special support (e.g. learners with physical or mental constraints; learners with learning disorders).
  • Consider and respond to potential accessibility issues when selecting, modifying or creating digital resources and to provide alternative or compensatory tools or approaches for learners with special needs.
  • Use design principles for increasing accessibility for the resources and digital environments used in teaching.
  • Continuously monitor and reflect on the suitability of the measures implemented to improve accessibility and adapt strategies accordingly.

Another good resource and reminder to take all learning styles into consideration when developing digital resources

Our Response: A comment is always helpful, thanks.

Such a massive area it's a challenge to cover in a few minutes but this is a nice approach and exemplifies the accessibility benefits of flipping the teaching approaches, creating active learning tasks and involving disabled students in discussions. I guess the big issue for most practitioners is 'how long will this approach take' and 'what do I prioritise?'. Given those considerations there might be value in also exploring where an institution's digital vision and strategy is essential in supporting practice - but that would involve missing out something else important!

Our Response: You feedback is important to us and will inform our future development.

So important for us, educators, to use a wide range of media as teaching material, and not just lots of text. Cognitive overload will confuse learners. This module is a good reminder for us to pace and “scaffold learning with cues, clues and context.”

Our Response: Thank you for your helpful comments which will inform our ongoing development.
