Give a brief description of your work context and responsibilities, e.g. your teaching background, experience, type of organisation (e.g. FE college, ACL), subject/curriculum you teach/lead, your learners (skills level, any particular inclusion needs, age range of group, size of group)

Head of Department for an outreach centre offering L1-L3 to Adult learners for a FE college. There are 11 staff who work with those who have not engaged well with education in the past including current and ex-offenders. manage work for the JCP offering specific projects across East Kent working with a variety of partners.

How did you use the learning from this/these module(s) (briefly describe the learning context, with a focus on Dealing with Difference and Diversity)

The tutors at the EKC Training Centre have been tasked with updating their resources and engaging with new digital means of teaching, learning and assessment. They train on technical courses such as IT professional, plumbing and electric in order to be more attractive to the incredibly diverse set of learners we have. How did you adapt/modify activities and/or resources for your context providing alternative approaches with specific reference to Dealing with Difference and Diversity practices?

The staff have designed more diverse resources for their subjects. We have put in place Classroom Onenote for every course and added the learning tools available from Microsoft. We have added an induction session to teach the learners the tools which are available to support and access issues and this has included the translation tool in the Micorosft Suite which has made an incredible... more

Provide any examples of any new approaches tested out.

The IT department have worked with Cisco and Microsoft to be able to access specific online learning packages in a variety of languages and has allowed at least 2 learners to complete courses in the their first language which means they have completed much more quickly than they would if we could only offer these in English.

What worked well, or did not work so well? How would you approach the activity/use the resource differently next time?

Most especially the tutors have made fantastic use of the translation tools available with modern software which have been incredibly well received by the learners who have made excellent use of this in their learning. The tools are taught in induction and in the future we plan to incorporate all the new tools which are updated by the MS365 in order to keep digitally relevant.

How did the learning from the module(s) impact on the quality of the learning experience?

The fact that the tutors have had to undertake this task has improved the resources as well as enabling the learners for the future as they learn how to deal with digital tools that can break down barriers and allow access where it was difficult before.

How have you initiated strategic change/quality improvement in relation to Dealing with Difference and Diversity, eg at a peer, department, organisational, regional, national level)?

The Microsoft Reading tools have been added as standard to all devices within the department and the use of them has been covered in a new part of the induction programme. The translate app has been added to the Edge Browser on all of the images for the devices in the department – again this has been added to the induction programme to enable the learners to use this tool. What will be your next step in bringing about further change?

Reflection is now embedded into the 1:1 review with the staff and they are challenged to come up with new ways of widening their courses to be able to be available to more learners. I would like to see the college embrace the use of VI and VR which we could offer to the other HMP sites which are geographically distanced to prepare learners to enter at L2 to technical courses such as plumbing... more
