Give a brief description of your work context and responsibilities, e.g. your teaching background, experience, type of organisation (e.g. FE college, ACL), subject/curriculum you teach/lead, your learners (skills level, any particular inclusion needs, age range of group, size of group)

I support prison tutors in face to face training courses to help them create more engaging resources that offender learners can access independently and with less reliance on literacy skills (which are often poor). Within the prison estate context, IT resources are limited and Internet access is tightly locked down to virtual campus so we rely on tools and techniques that can be run locally on... more

How did you use the learning from this module in your teaching context?

I wanted to help prison tutors maximise their repertoire of approaches 2 learning resource, and not just rely on digital handouts online. I explored portable applications that could run from a CD drive and organised with the prison IT managers for a CD of appropriate tools to be security checked and added to the local network. The tools included stand alone mind mapping, text to speech, word... more

What worked well?

The approach generated positive feedback and allowed people to use their pedagogical experience and knowledge of the learners to identify new opportunities afforded by the digital tools. This helped generate energy in the group and stimulated innovative teaching approaches.

What would you do differently next time?

To properly embed the skills and enthusiasm, I would value follow up opportunities to keep the momentum and encourage them to keep developing new approaches with the learners.
