As director of an Independent Training Provider I have a variety of roles working with diverse organisations. My main role is in Initial Teacher Training and ongoing CPD for FE, HE and in work-based scenarios. How did you use the learning from this module in your teaching context?

What I have been able to do is to enable a small group of new teachers to undertake a dialogue around Hall's theory and ask them to apply these findings to some Apprentice learner groups and colleagues that they are working in work-based training scenarios. What worked well?

The ideas put forward by Hall seemed to chime with learners and they have derived meaning directly applicable to their own scenario by considering the ways in which people from different cultural backgrounds may react differently when engaging in to a F2F group work or online discussion group activity. What would you do differently next time?

Rather than doing anything differently I now plan to extend my teacher trainee groups’ experience with managing diversity when we return to a more conventional facilitation mode. What I plan to do is to give them a variety of texts in a range of different languages and ask them to experiment with a variety of translator tools, using smart phones and tablets, and then to evaluate how these... more
