Give a brief description of your work context and responsibilities, e.g. your teaching background, experience, type of organisation (e.g. FE college, ACL), subject/curriculum you teach/lead, your learners (skills level, any particular inclusion needs, age range of group, size of group)

I work in my at a small FE College in the quality of education department and I teach health and social care. In my role in the quality of education department I support in ensuring that teaching and learning across the college is to a high standard. I have been teaching for over 13 years and I am keen to use digital technology to enhance the lessons that I deliver.

How did you use the learning from this/these module(s) (briefly describe the learning context, with a focus on Accessibility)

Myself and my line manager have both been looking at accessibility and have brought what we have learnt to our quality of education department meeting. How did you adapt/modify activities and/or resources for your context providing alternative approaches with specific reference to Accessibility practices?

I have been looking at the resources that I create for my teaching to see if I can make them more accessible. I have reduced the amount of text that I include on my PowerPoint slides and have included more appropriate images to support the points that I am making. Provide any examples of any new approaches tested out.

I have been using less text on my PowerPoint slides and more images to see how learners respond to this. I have also been using Flipgrid as a form of assessment with my learners so that they can record rather than write their response, which has provided them all with the opportunity to contribute. I have also been embedding videos into my PowerPoint presentations.

What worked well, or did not work so well? How would you approach the activity/use the resource differently next time?

The learners have responded positively to there being less text on my slides and images have effectively supported their learning. The learners were a little unsure of Flipgrid at first but then recognised how it could be used for them to express their ideas without them having to write them down.

How did the learning from the module(s) impact on the quality of the learning experience?

It has raised my awareness and understanding of accessibility which has made me ensure that the resources I use and create are more accessible. This has resulted in students being able to access my resources more easily which has greatly supported the quality of education that they are receiving.

How have you initiated strategic change/quality improvement in relation to Accessibility, eg at a peer, department, organisational, regional, national level)?

I have discussed accessibility at our quality of education department meetings and with the principal of my college. In these meetings we have discussed the accessibility training that is required for staff across the college. What will be your next step in bringing about further change?

I will be supporting the delivery of training about accessibility to staff across my college and will continue to discuss its importance with the new teachers that I mentor. I am also part of my college observation team so will be focusing on accessibility when carrying out lesson observations.
